Africa’s E-Motorcycle Revolution Accelerates

2025-06-01 View:3Leave a message

2025 marked a breakout year for electric motorcycles in Africa: 15.3% of newly registered motorcycles in Kenya were electric, among the highest ratios globally; there are now more than 208 active e-mobility companies across Africa, with funding exceeding USD 75 million in a single quarter in early 2026. Electrification is reshaping Africa’s two-wheeled mobility ecosystem at an unprecedented pace, with Chinese lithium-ion battery technology and battery-swap solutions as key drivers.

Countries including Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda have launched supportive policies: Rwanda allocated USD 300 million to convert 100,000 fuel motorcycles to electric; Kenya eliminated import duties on e-motorcycles; Uganda targets full public transport electrification by 2030. Combined with lower operating costs, these measures are accelerating the shift of boda-boda fleets to electric, while battery-swapping networks expand rapidly across East African cities.

Chinese manufacturers—with proven expertise in lithium battery production, vehicle R&D, and swap systems—are deeply involved in Africa’s e-motorcycle rollout: from complete vehicle exports to CKD local assembly, and from battery supply to joint swap station deployment, Chinese solutions address core pain points such as unstable power, limited service infrastructure, and high upfront costs. Leading African e-mobility firm Spiro recently closed a USD 100 million financing (the largest ever in Africa’s e-two-wheeler sector) and plans to deploy over 100,000 e-motorcycles by late 2025, relying heavily on Chinese partners for supply chains and technology.

The African e-motorcycle market is projected to grow from approximately USD 17 billion in 2025 to USD 28.3 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of over 7.8%—making it one of the world’s fastest-growing green mobility markets. China–Africa e-motorcycle cooperation not only supports Africa’s low-carbon transition but also opens massive new growth opportunities for China’s new energy industry, creating a model of win–win collaboration along the Green Silk Road.
